DDSV youth German championship 2019
Our trip to the DDSV German youth championships began with bad news right away. Our team had shrunk by one player because Jeromeo dropped out through illness, so we set off for Friedrichroda with only Konstantin and Leo.
At the start of the tournament the draw was not ideal either. On Saturday both of our lads ended up in the same group – with 65 participants, more than unlucky. The group’s opening match ended in a 2:0 win for Leo, playing 501 MO best of 3, against his room-mate.
Konstantin recovered quickly from the defeat at his first German championship, though, and with a narrow 1:2 loss and a 2:1 win took third place in the group and a spot in the B final round. Leo qualified for the A final round without losing a leg.
The hot Saturday ended in high spirits in the hotel pool.
Our youth officer Dome put in a good performance in the coaches’ tournament and came seventh. A 167 HF like the one he hit that evening is something his club would surely like to see in a league match too :)
On Sunday it quickly became clear that it would be no walk in the park for our 2018 German runner-up. After a narrow 2:0 win in his first match, a 1:2 defeat put him in the losers’ round early on. At that point in the tournament the field was very even and matches beyond the 9th round were the exception. So it was that Leo, after an outstanding third match with two 180s and a 2:0 win, had to strike his colours in the very next game. The 1:2 defeat meant seventh place in the A final round. He was able to put his – for him rather disappointing – placing behind him quickly, given the quality of his play. During the tournament he underlined his class with several specials: HS 180 x3, HS 165 (T15 with the third dart, leaving D40), HF 122, LD 18 x2, LD 17.
Konstantin had a dream day on the checkouts. He quickly took charge of the B final round with three 2:1 wins. His still fluctuating scoring, and the leg and match darts it gave his opponents, he countered ice-coldly and decided the matches in his favour. It did not matter whether it was a double or a treble – he simply "put it away". For coaches and supporters, a rollercoaster of emotions ;-)
He only just missed reaching the B final, losing the last two matches by the narrowest of margins. Unlike the other games, which he had turned around from 0:1 down, this time his opponents came out on top. So our debutant ends up with a great result: third place in the B round. Konstantin too showed a special worth seeing with his 99 high finish.
And so an exhausting weekend came to an end.
But after the darts tournament is before the darts tournament, and this coming Thursday youth training continues. All 10- to 18-year-olds are warmly invited to drop by.
